Empathic Ear is a counseling/coaching/problem-solving service
offered by Germinal Knowledge
Coaching, counselling and psychotherapy are all (not so) different approaches to problem solving. After years of training and practice in all these areas, I now prefer to think of myself as a "problem solver". But, there is no such official profession of "problem solver". So, this is the invention.
So, here is what I do: I listen. I ask questions. I find out what the nature of the problem is. If it is a problem that I do not have the qualifications to help solve (for example, a medical problem), I will help you find someone who can help.
If your problem is within my purvue, I first try to understand your way of thinking about the problem to the point that we can "think together". Then, we start to solve the problem, but with an additional twist: As we think through the problem, question all the perceptions, examine all the alternatives, we also, in parallel, step back and look at the problem solving process we are going through. The objective here is to give you a methodology for problem solving for life.
My primary areas of expertise in Coaching are:
- Conflict Management
- Experimental Design
- Statistical modeling and analysis
To distinguish among the activities mentionned above, note that:
- Coaching helps you attain a goal (usually professional) that is well-defined and targeted. The focus of coaching is to advance you toward this goal, to break down barriers to success.
- The term Counseling is often used interchangeably with psychotherapy, but there are important differences. The objectives of counseling are usually short term. The goal is not necessarily to attain lifelong personality changes, although the techniques from psychotherapy are often used. Depending on the country and the local laws, counseling may not require special qualifications.
- In most countries, psychotherapy can only be performed by university educated professionals with a license to practice. In general, the therapy is longer and also treats various mental/personality problems.
